Reaction 2

On Feb.09.10 America culture class did discussion that was related the movie "witness" and chapter 12 about culture shock according to different culture. There are Amish people story in the movie. I have prepared and discussed with my partner and classmate. After watching the movie, I am wondering about Amish people and John book's experience of culture shock. According to the movie, when Amish people and John book drive in a carriage to somewhere, they and non-Amish cross each other on the way. So some non-Amish people come closer to Amish. Then non-Amish people speak derisive word about Amish people's character and funny cloth. They insult to Amish constantly. For example, they said that "you are fool!""You cannot fight?!”
In this scene, I felt unfair and different culture, because Amish people just bear an affront and endure themselves. Moreover, even if Amish people keep still, John book fight with them. So non-Amish people run away. Maybe, it occurs because of different character. Sometimes Amish people suffer from other non-Amish people. As a result, I am wondering about existence that Amish people's pain.

Similarities and Differences about between Dita and Masika

First, I am going to show the similarities. One of the all, Dita and Masika moved to America for study. Dita wanted to goal of getting a B.A. degree in Boston and Masika wanted to study about a bachelor’s degree in psychology from a small liberal arts college in West Texas. They are also international student that Dita from Indonesia and Masika from the Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa so they can be a stranger. Before living and studying in the America, they had little confidence, because Dita had been awarded by the Indonesian government to attend college in the United States and Masika also thought that she knew enough about America culture throughout long trip in America. They could learn that they like and want subject because of they could take studio art class and psychogy. They have trouble with relationship of American. For example, Dita has roommate, even if her roommate is nice, many times describe their sexual activities with their boyfriends. Actually in Indonesia, it is not comfortable communication so Dita always feel embarrassed and not accustomed. Masika also has in class with her classmate. Masika wanted to talk with classmate, unfortunately classmate run out as soon as finish the class. It is hard than she thought and throughout many behaviors differed from African culture, she felt alone, isolated and disconnected. They also visited to someone for counseling but they could not receive to help. In case of Dita the adviser was on vacation and no one else could not see, by contrast Masika could talk with her professor but it could not encourage to Masoka.

Secondly, there are differences between Dita and Masika. Dita always along, there are few Indonesian student so she could not find the native friends besides she had been away from her family therefore she had deep depression and loneliness, Dita always miss family and many close friends by contrast, Masika has husband and daughter so when she come back her home, she can feel comfortable and warm even if In University is not. Then Dita have problem with understanding class. This semester is the first to Dita so her English is not perfect and many troubles with low grade on tests and communication with professor. However Masika did not problem about understanding in class. Moreover Dita have food trouble. America foods are never good to Dita and always bland and greasy. In case of Masika, did not mention. Dita can not adjust to America culture because she had lived for short time so it is harder to Dita. By contrast Masika also problem in America but she has been living for long times, it means she can adjust easily than Dita.
